Massive Fire in Solan's Arki Market: Child Dead, Several Feared Trapped (X)

Solan: A fierce fire tore through a crowded area of Arki town in Himachal Pradesh's Solan district late on Sunday night, killing a young child and trapping others under rubble, officials and residents said.

The blaze erupted near the old bus stand close to the UCO Bank building, sending thick smoke into the sky and panicking shopkeepers and families in the winding market lanes.

How Many Were Hurt or Missing?

Police said the charred body of a child, believed to be about seven years old, was recovered from the scene. At least eight to nine people are feared trapped in the debris of burned shops and homes, though rescue teams were still trying to confirm exact numbers early on Monday morning.

Where and When Did the Blaze Start?

The fire broke out in the old bus stand area of Arki, around midnight.

According to reports, the fire initially broke out in a residential house, and within minutes spread to nearby shops and other buildings. Within minutes, the entire market was engulfed in smoke and flames.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud explosion before flames shot up, suggesting that multiple gas cylinders stored in the affected buildings may have detonated.

What Are Rescue Teams Doing?

Firefighters from nearby towns including Arki, Solan, Nalagarh and Shimla were rushed to the site. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined local police in pulling apart rubble and dousing embers. Residents said the rescue operation continued through the early hours of Monday.

Have Officials Spoken?

Solan's Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Singh confirmed the child’s death and the ongoing search for others still missing.

Arki MLA Sanjay Awasthi said authorities are doing everything possible to find survivors and clear the wreckage. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

He also said that eight to nine people were feared trapped in the fire and further stated that the deceased child belonged to a family of migrant labourers. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Rescue operations continued until the last reports came in.

What Is the Local Reaction?

Neighbours who stood by as firefighters battled the blaze described a scene of chaos and fear. Market traders said the area is usually busy even late at night, and they are shaken by how fast the fire spread. Some residents have rushed to nearby hospitals and makeshift relief camps to check on loved ones.
